5 Reasons Why People Buy Long Term Care Insurance

Saving for retirement?  With a national average cost of over $45,000/year for an assisted living facility, the cost of long term care services may well be one of the most significant threats to those savings. With the University of Northern Iowa Group Long Term Care Insurance Plan, you can protect yourself today for care you may need later.

Some of the most named reasons why people buy Long Term Care insurance are:

  1. To maintain their independence so they won't have to rely on family members.

  2. To protect their assets against the high costs of long term care and to preserve their children's inheritance.

  3. To make long term care services affordable, such as home health care and custodial care.

  4. To provide themselves with more options than just nursing home care, and to pay for nursing home care if it's needed.

  5. To preserve their standard of living.

Employees have an opportunity to purchase coverage through Genworth Life Insurance Company (Genworth Life) at competitive group rates. Newly hired University of Northern Iowa employees may enroll within their first 30 days. Depending on the employee's age and the plan they select, they may not be required to complete a health survey. If enrolling after their first 30 days of eligibility, employees can apply for coverage but they will be subject to a Genworth health survey. Your coverage is portable; it can go with you if you change jobs, retire or leave employment for as long as you continue to pay premiums.

Healthy Weight Program Updates

In January 2018, Human Resource Services began taking applications for the new Healthy Weight program. The program received great response and in March participants began one of the two program options, Weight Watchers® @ Work or Naturally Slim®. With the first 10 weeks now complete, over 1,100 pounds have been lost!

Feedback from participants has been very positive, and one participant shared that her Body Mass Index, went down by three points in just 8 weeks of participation! In addition, supporting web pages have been added. The Healthy Weight Community website provides program updates and also includes a place for employees to share healthy recipes. With physical activity being a key component to weight loss and maintenance, the Let’s Get Moving page was added to provide tips and videos to help employees stay active.

Know Before You Go

Wellmark®, UNI’s health insurance vendor, offers tools to help members determine the cost of an appointment prior to visiting the doctor’s office. These tools are called the Wellmark Care Finder and Cost Estimator Tool located within the MyWellmark system. These tools will show you what your out-of-pocket cost will be for different types of services and appointments. Keep in mind that services done within the state of Iowa cost the self-insured plans less than when services are done outside of the state. The Care Finder tool also provides ratings and reviews on providers when you complete a search. We have put together a website called Know Before You Go to help you select your care.
