My Well-being

November is Diabetes Awareness Month

November is diabetes awareness month. Type 2 diabetes is the most prevalent form of diabetes in the U.S. The CDC estimates around 23.1 million in the U.S. have been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, and another 7.2 million are undiagnosed. This means nearly one quarter of individuals living with diabetes in the U.S. don’t even know they have it!

While diabetes is a manageable condition with many treatment options, going undiagnosed and without treatment can cause a great deal of harm to a person's health. Health concerns with undiagnosed diabetes include kidney damage, eye damage, an increased risk of heart disease, or stroke.

A simple blood glucose test can assist healthcare providers with diagnosing type 2 diabetes. Adults with risk factors (being overweight/obese, being over the age 45, having a family history, having low physical activity, a history of gestational diabetes) may benefit from annual screenings. UNI Employee Well-being offers one free biometric screening per academic year that provides a comprehensive screening including blood glucose test, body composition testing, and body mass index. To learn more and register for the next biometric screening, visit: https://hrs.uni.edu/wellbeing/bioscreening

Obtaining a healthy weight helps reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes. UNI offers WW workshops on-campus to assist with obtaining a healthy weight. Employees and spouses can join as paying members anytime, and attend on-campus workshops.

To join WW as a paying member visit: wellness.weightwatchers.com, and enter the UNI Employer ID: 15316494
