What You Need to Know

National Hydration Day

National Hydration Day is June 23, the perfect reminder to drink more water as temperatures rise this summer. But before you fill up your next glass, there’s one important question to ask:

Do you really know what’s in your water?

With Iowa’s water quality making headlines, now is the time to take a closer look at what’s coming from your tap. Have you checked your local water report? Better yet, have you ever tested your drinking water?

Home water test kits are affordable, easy to use, and available at most home improvement stores. You may be surprised by what you find. From tap water to bottled water to reverse osmosis systems, many people are wondering: What’s actually the cleanest and healthiest option?

This June, celebrate National Hydration Day by taking on TWO challenges:

✅ Research and test your drinking water.
✅ Participate in the Sip Into Summer Challenge (details coming June 22).

Because healthy hydration starts with knowing what’s in your glass.

Ways to Use Your Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA)

Summer is a great time to remind those enrolled in a Flexible Spending Account (FSA) that funds can be used on many over-the-counter items. Products like sunscreen and allergy medications are eligible for reimbursement.

For a full list of eligible expenses, including over-the-counter items, please visit the FSA website.

If you participate in a Dependent Care FSA, many summer camps may also qualify as eligible expenses and can be paid using your contributions. Be sure to review the Dependent Care FSA eligible expenses list for complete details.

Did You Know?

Step Away From Your Desk. Your Brain Needs It.

Powering through the workday without breaks might seem productive, but it can actually lead to burnout, stress and decreased focus. Taking short breaks throughout the day can help you recharge, improve concentration, boost productivity and support your overall mental health.

A quick walk, lunch away from your screen or even a few minutes to reset can make a big difference. Breaks aren’t a distraction from work, they’re part of doing your best work.

So here’s your reminder: Have you taken a break today?

As a reminder, all non-exempt staff should take a 30-minute unpaid lunch break. Non-exempt staff working an eight (8) hour shift may be provided up to two (2) paid break periods of up to 15 minutes, and staff working a minimum four (4) hour shift may be provided one paid break of up to 15 minutes. For additional information, review University Policy 4.22.

Soak Up the Summer, Not the Sun Damage

Summer is here, which means more time outside. While getting outdoors can do wonders for your physical and mental health, too much sun exposure can take a serious toll on your skin and eyes.

Just a few unprotected hours in the sun can increase your risk of sunburn, premature aging, skin cancer, and even cataracts. The good news? A few simple habits can help keep you safe while still enjoying every minute of summer.

Protect yourself by:

  • Applying a broad-spectrum sunscreen daily (even on cloudy days)
  • Reapplying sunscreen every two hours, especially if swimming or sweating
  • Wearing sunglasses, hats, and lightweight protective clothing
  • Taking breaks in the shade during peak sun hours

For more sun safety tips, visit the CDC’s website.
