Students and Graduate Assistants

Students and graduate assistants have several options for Health Insurance. Following is a general outline for domestic students:

  1. Enroll in SHIP plan. For more information on the plan and eligibility requirements please visit the Student Health Center’s Insurance Information web page.
  2. Coverage under a parent’s plan until age 26.
  3. Purchase coverage under an exchange in Iowa or your state of residence.
  4. Student employees, including graduate assistants, who meet an ACA eligibility profile (see Table 2).

Student employees and graduate assistants who meet an ACA eligibility profile will receive communication from the Human Resource Services Benefits Team. The email will provide additional information such as an enrollment form and coverage start date if elected.

Monthly Premium Billing

Student employees who enroll in the ACA SHIP coverage will be billed directly for the monthly premium on their university bill. If a premium is not paid, coverage will end the next month and this will indicate a waive in health coverage for the employee and child(ren).

Waiver of Enrollment

If the student employee would like to enroll in the ACA SHIP plan they have 30 days from their eligibility date to complete and return the SHIP ACA enrollment form to the Student Health Clinic or coverage will be automatically waived.
