Phased Retirement
Program Approved by the Iowa Board of Regents
Eligibility for Faculty and Staff
- Must be employed in a non-temporary and full-time appointment for a minimum of 15 years.
- Reached the age of 57.
- Faculty applying for phased for the upcoming fall semester must submit their request prior to March 15.
- Faculty applying for phased for the upcoming spring semester must submit their request prior to October 15.
All agreements are subject to eligibility and departmental, divisional, and university approval. Requests may be denied if they are not in the best interest of the institution.
Agreement Schedule and Compensation
One Year or Less Phased Agreement Option
- Work Schedule: Appointments must be 50% time.
- Compensation: No additional compensation is provided above the budgeted salary.
- TIAA: Employee and employer contributions of TIAA, our defined contribution retirement plan, will be based on the salary which would have been obtained had the individual continued a full-time appointment. Only employees enrolled in TIAA receive this benefit.
Two Year Phased Agreement Option
Year One of the Two Year Agreement
- Work Schedule: Appointments can only be between 65% time and 50% time.
- Compensation: At the discretion of the institution, up to an additional 10% of the budgeted salary is provided. UNI has elected to provide the 10% incentive to those starting their reduced appointment.
- TIAA: Employee and employer contributions of TIAA, our defined contribution retirement plan, will be based on the salary which would have been obtained had the individual continued a full-time appointment. Only employees enrolled in TIAA receive this benefit.
Year Two of the Two Year Agreement
- Work Schedule: Appointments must be 50% time.

Benefits
Health, dental, life and disability insurance will continue at the full-time salary level prior to the start of the agreement. Contributions to TIAA will continue to be made at full budgeted salary level prior to the start of the agreement. Contributions to IPERS and FICA are made based on the actual salary level during the agreement. Vacation and sick leave accruals will be prorated based on the percentage of the appointment.
