The University of Northern Iowa is pleased to offer a valuable addition to your employee benefits, an online will preparation service. This is a free benefit under your university life insurance plan, which is offered through the Principal Financial Group.

This service is offered through ARAG Services, LLC and allows you to create a will, living will, and/or power of attorney documents for free. These documents provide legal documentation of your wishes if you are not able to speak for yourself. As long as you are covered by UNI’s life insurance plan, you will be able to create and change the documents with no charge.

Steps to take advantage of this benefit

Visit https://principal.araggroup.com/onlineDocsMVC/index.htm
Create an account, or log in if you have an existing account. Group Policy Number to create an account is 1120981.
Click once on the "DIY Documents" button on the left side of the screen.
Choose the document you'd like to create.
Read carefully through the information.
Click once on "Create New".
Follow the online instructions.

1Q: Why is it important that I have a will?

If you become incapacitated and don’t have a current living will/health care power of attorney, the decisions concerning your health care can become excruciating for loved ones. And if you die without an up-to-date will, divvying up assets – and the custody of any minor children – can fall at the mercy of your state’s law. A few simple steps today can alleviate numerous issues down the road.

2Q: What type of legal documents can be created for me and my spouse using the will preparation service and what is the difference between the documents?

There are four types of documents that can be created or altered; a will, a living will, a health care power of attorney and a financial power of attorney. The purpose of a will is used to specify what is to be done with your property when you die and names the executor of your estate. You can also use a will to name a guardian for your minor children. The purpose of a living will is to set out certain treatment care options should you become terminally ill. The purpose of either a financial or health care power of attorney is to either name an agent to handle your health affairs if you are no longer able to make a health care decision for yourself or handle your financial affairs.

3Q: How do I know if I’m eligible to use the will preparation service?

If you are covered under the university’s group term life insurance policy, you are eligible to use this service. In most cases, all non-temporary positions are eligible.
