Four simple actions that can make a difference.
Because we're self-insured, lowering claims costs helps protect the health plan we all share.
Why Does This Matter?
UNI is self-insured.
If you're wondering why your choices can make a difference, it's because UNI's health plan is self-insured.
With a fully insured health plan, an employer generally pays an insurance company a premium to take on the cost of members' claims.
UNI's plan works differently. UNI pays the claims incurred by our plan members. Wellmark administers the plan and provides access to its network and resources, but the cost of claims comes from our self-insured health plan.
So, when a claim costs less, UNI's health plan pays less.
That doesn't mean you should avoid needed care or choose care based solely on price. It means that when you have choices, taking a few minutes to compare your options can make a real difference.
