Faculty Percent of Time & Workload Expectations
Description
The percent of time (effort) for Faculty should not exceed 100% during each separate term (e.g., a total of all PAFs paying for summer session work should not exceed 100%). The PAF Preparer should use the following chart to determine the effort or percent of time that an employee will be working during the time period.
To verify the employee is not exceeding 100%, the PAF Preparer should check to see if the employee already has a SMO PAF for the same time period (i.e., summer or winter) through another department. On the SMO Pay tab, the PAF Preparer should click once on the SMO and SPC PAFs link to view the Summer/Other Appointment and/or Special Compensation History report for each employee prior to submitting the PAF.
Example
A professor works on a grant in another department at 50% effort for the month of June. The PAF Preparer begins a SMO PAF to pay for the grant work in June, opens the Summer/Other Appointment and/or Special Compensation History report and discovers that the professor also has a PAF to teach a class in June at 67% “percent of time”. Therefore, the professor is only eligible to work 33% effort or "percent of time" on the grant for the month of June.

Other summer awards not in the above table need to specify workload and percentage by dividing the total number of hours working on the assignment by the number of working hours in a month:

For example, a faculty member is expected to work 4 hours per day for 5 days in the month of June. To calculate the percentage of time, divide 20 (4hrs x 5 days) by 160 hours (June hrs in month) = 12.5%.
