Reducing High Cholesterol for a Heart Health

In the news we hear a lot about how bad cholesterol is for us. But what is cholesterol, and why is it so bad? Simply stated, cholesterol is a compound that circulates in the blood stream and helps our bodies complete a number of essential functions. As an essential compound cholesterol alone is not bad. It is when cholesterol levels rise too high that it may become a risk factor for heart disease.

The first step in obtaining healthy cholesterol numbers is to know what your cholesterol levels are. You can do this by participating in an annual Biometric Screening. Employee Well-being provides faculty and staff with one free biometric screening per academic year. If your cholesterol numbers are in a healthy range, great! These numbers are fluid, and as such should be checked yearly.

If your cholesterol numbers are high, there are resources that can assist you in reaching heart healthy cholesterol levels. First, talk with your doctor and create a plan to reduce your cholesterol based on your overall health. After talking with your doctor, Employee Well-being also provides faculty and staff with the opportunity to participate in Nurse Health Coaching. Nurse health coaches assist employees in setting short and long-term goals, and will work with you to help you achieve those goals.

If you would like to learn more about Biometric Screenings or Nurse Health Coaching email employeewellbeing@uni.edu.
