Financial Wellness

Living, Saving, and Investing Green

It has been proven that by living more green (i.e. environmentally friendly) you can save more green (i.e. money, mint, coin, moolah). Reducing and reusing are great ways to help the environment and save money at the same time. Consider reducing your use of carbon emissions. Riding your bike to work this time of year can help you get more movement in, but also help you save on gas. Consider reducing your use of electricity. All electric appliances and devices contribute to our overall use. Some big ways are reducing the use of household air conditioning and clothes dryers.

Consider opening your windows in the evening to let cool air in and help reduce use of air conditioning throughout the day. Hanging clothes outside to dry is a great way to get whites whiter, helps clothes last longer, and saves on your energy bill. Once you get fresh on ways to reduce expenditures and you start finding more "mint". Consider investing that extra coin. Starting small with even $50 dollars a month can add up big over time. You can open a Tax-Deferred Annuity at any time during the year through Benefits Self-Service. Live green, save green, and invest green to have more money to retire!

My Well-being

Just Keep Moving!

One great tool we have to combat stress and stay mentally and physically well is movement. Whether it be walking, running, biking, hiking, roller blading, or break dancing, it is all good and all helps positively impact our health. Stressed at work or stuck on a problem? Going for a brief walk has been proven to help. We have a beautiful campus and September is a gorgeous time of year. Take a stroll around the Campanile.

Are you feeling wiped out when you get home? It may be counterintuitive but movement has been proven to give you a boost of energy both physically and mentally. You’ll be more productive and happier at home when you take some time to move. Pair it with the great outdoors for an added lift. The Cedar Valley has awesome trails and the fall is a perfect time of year to discover some new ones.

The UNI campus and Cedar Valley remain great places to move and groove. Get out, get active and stay well!

Own Your Benefits

Savings Through the FSA Store®

ASIFlex, our Flexible Spending Account (FSA) vendor, allows purchases through the FSA Store® using your flex spending dollars. This website is a great resource to see what items are eligible for purchase and to use your flex spending money. The FSA Store® website also has a Savings Center where available coupons are listed for purchases at the FSA Store®. A code of ASIF52021 will get you $5 off a purchase now through December 31, 2021.

When Can You Make Changes to Your Benefits?

Experiencing a qualified life event such as marriage, or birth of a child, allows you to make changes to your benefits. If you do not have a qualified life event during the year you may make changes annually during Open Enrollment, which will occur November 1 - November 30, 2021. Any changes made during the open enrollment period will be effective January 1, 2022. Human Resource Services will announce information regarding Open Enrollment through our benefits webpage, HRS Latest News, Inside UNI, UNI email, and home mailings. Keep watching, more information will be coming soon.
