My Well-being

Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month

March is Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month. Colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer diagnosis in the U.S. and the second leading cause of cancer death. While this disease is common among all Americans, African Americans have a 20% higher incident rate, and a 40% higher death rate. While we can’t change our family history or risk level based on ethnicity, there are things we all can do to reduce the risk. A healthy lifestyle not only benefits our current well-being but also can reduce our risk for many cancers and diseases including colorectal cancer.

Diets rich in vegetables and fruits are high in fiber and nutrient dense. They also contain phytochemicals that help to protect against cancer. Exercise has also been shown to reduce the risk. A healthy diet and exercise also helps to maintain a healthy weight, which further reduces the risk for colorectal cancer.

Looking for help achieving or maintaining a healthy weight? UNI employees can join WW anytime at a discounted rate! Also, certain wellness expenses, including gym memberships and weight loss programs, may be reimbursable through a Flex Spending Account (FSA). Not enrolled in a FSA? Check-out the 2021 Flexible Spending Provisions

Alcohol and tobacco use can increase the risk for many cancers including colorectal cancer. If you choose to drink, do so in moderation. For those wishing to quit tobacco use, UNI offers free Tobacco Cessation help.

Finally, the best way for early detection is to get screened when necessary. Both UNI health insurance plans cover 100% preventative care including recommended colonoscopies starting at age 50, or when recommended by your healthcare provider. Don’t delay getting screened due to COVID-19. Screenings can still be completed safely. Take the pledge and get screened when it is recommended.

Important Information About Your Flexible Spending Account (FSA)

On December 27, 2020 the President signed the COVID-19 Relief Bill passed by Congress, allowing UNI the opportunity to temporarily amend our flexible spending plans for the 2021 calendar year. The following two provisions impact Health Care FSA and Dependent Care FSA and will expire December 31, 2021.

The deadline for individuals with remaining 2020 unused FSA funds has been extended to December 31, 2021, rather than March 15, 2021. This extension also allows 2020 participants to use their 2020 unused funds for 2021 claims. This provision expires December 31, 2021.

Between January 1 - December 31, 2021, you may elect, increase, decrease, or waive 2021 FSA contributions without a qualifying life event. No retroactive changes are allowed. This provision expires December 31, 2021.

Limitations do exist. For more information and examples visit our 2021 FSA Plan Updates webpage.

FSA Informational Session

A brief informational session on what a flexible spending account is, the benefits of using one, as well as tips on how to be successful with an FSA will be available via Zoom for those seeking more information.

Save Money on Your Prescriptions

When a healthcare provider writes you a prescription do you know what it’s going to cost prior to arriving at the pharmacy? The cost could be less at another pharmacy, or you could be saving money if a prescription is written as a 90-day prescription or a generic is available. Another question to consider is if the prescription is covered by your health plan. The UNI Human Resource Services Benefits Team has developed a step-by-step guide for you to follow before you have your prescription filled or re-filled. This guide can be used now with your current prescriptions or the next time you are at the doctor's office. The guide is simple to use and smartphone friendly.

Your health is important! Know your options and the costs.

Recognizing Our Retirees

We are thankful for the service of all of UNI's retirees! With their consent we are able to celebrate their years of service and share their information with the entire campus community.
