My Well-being
National Nutrition Month March 2019

Spring Forward Into Nutrition

Spring is full of newness, as the snow begins to melt (AHEM), trees bud, and flowers begin to bloom. As you take time to move your clocks ahead, also take time to consider ways to add more nutrient dense food into your regular diet. It can be as simple as trying one new fruit or vegetable per week. March is National Nutrition Month® and what better way to celebrate nutrition than by adding some new fruits and vegetables to your repertoire.

Not sure where to start? Begin in the produce section, and look through what options are available. You may be amazed by the selection and varieties available. Better yet, talk to the produce manager about what is fresh, new, and in-stock. I bet you’ll be pleased with the wealth of knowledge you’ll find there! Have little ones? Bring them along and let them help make the selections. Getting children engaged in nutrition young builds healthy eating habits that can last a lifetime. Also, it can be a way to make the grocery shopping a little more fun for them. Turning it into more of game than a chore can improve everyone's shopping experience!

When you try that new selection, slow down and eat purposefully. Observe the shape and the color of the produce. Notice how it tastes, and the texture as you eat it. As you finish eating, take note on how you feel. Did you like it? Did you feel good about making a healthy choice? How about 30 minutes after? Maybe you have more energy, or maybe you have heartburn. As you add these healthy options to your diet, maybe keep a journal or make a mental note of what you liked, what you didn’t, and how it made you feel. Adding to your produce choices helps us ramp-up on nutrition and enjoy some new flavors. Plan to try some new varieties, spice up your life, and "spring" forward into a diet richer in nutrition.
