My Well-being: Oh my Aching...Joint and Bone Health

Human Resource Services will host a one hour informational session on joint and bone health. Dr. Eagen, an Orthopedic Surgeon with Covenant, will present on prevention, treatment, and lifestyle changes. All faculty and staff are welcome to attend. This presentation will take place January 24 at 3 p.m. in the State College Room MAU. Please register in advance.

Retirement Readiness: Social Security 101

Human Resource Services will host two informational sessions on Social Security benefits and preparing for retirement. Learn how Social Security benefits affect retirement, strategies to maximize your benefits, and ideas to help you set up your retirement income. All faculty and staff are welcome to attend. The hour long sessions will be presented by VALIC: February 4 at 3 p.m. and February 5 at noon in the State College Room MAU. Please register in advance.

Are you thinking about retiring in the next 5-10 years or less? Human Resource Services will host two informational sessions on retiring from UNI. Join us to help you plan ahead and learn the requirements and benefits available at retirement from UNI. All faculty and staff are welcome to attend. The hour long sessions will be presented by Chelsi Armstrong, Retirement Planning Coordinator, Human Resource Services: February 7 and 8 at noon in the State College Room MAU. Retirement Readiness: Paying Yourself - Income Options in Retirement

Human Resource Services will host two informational sessions on what your income options may be in retirement. Join us to learn the basic rules governing the most common retirement accounts, gain perspective on when to withdraw different assets, and discover the income choices TIAA offers. All faculty and staff are welcome to attend. The hour long sessions will be presented by TIAA: February 18 at 3 p.m. and February 19 at noon in the State College Room MAU. My Well-being: Maintaining a Healthy Heart for Life

Human Resource Services will host a one hour informational session on maintaining a healthy heart. Merriam Lake, Health Promotions Facilitator and RN with Covenant, will present on prevention of congestive heart failure and coronary artery disease, a heart healthy diet, and movement strategies to maintain a healthy heart. All faculty and staff are welcome to attend. This presentation will take place on February 26 at 10 a.m. The location is the Oak Room in the Maucker Union. Please register in advance. My Well-being: Little Changes Add-up - Setting Yourself up for Success

Human Resource Services will host a one hour informational session on small changes that may assist in weight management. Susie Roberts, with Employee and Family Resources, will present on understanding components of food labels, identifying ways to make grocery shopping easier, and following current dietary guidelines to make better food choices. All faculty and staff are welcome to attend. This presentation will take place on February 26 at 1 p.m. in the State College Room MAU. Please register in advance.

Financial Wellness

New Year, New Budget

A budget is a plan that shows you how you can spend your money every month. Making a budget can help you make sure you do not run out of money each month. A budget also will help you save money for your goals or for emergencies.

How do I make a budget?

Write down your expenses. Expenses are what you spend money on. Expenses include:

Bills:

  • bills that are the same each month, like rent
  • bills that might change each month, like utilities
  • bills you pay once or twice a year, like car insurance

Other expenses, like:

  • food
  • gas
  • entertainment
  • clothes
  • school supplies
  • money for family unplanned expenses, like car repairs or medical bills
  • credit card bills

You might have bills that change every month. Look at what you paid for the same month last year. You might need $200 for your gas bill in January, but $30 in July.

Write down how much money you make. This includes your paychecks and any other money you get, like child support.

Subtract your expenses from how much money you make. This number should be more than zero. If it is less than zero, you are spending more money than you make. Look at your budget to see what you do not need or what you could spend less on.

How do I use my budget?

You can use your budget every month:

  • At the beginning of the month, make a plan for how you will spend your money that month. Write what you think you will earn and spend.
  • Write down what you spend. Try to do this every day.
  • At the end of the month, see if you spent what you planned.
  • Use the information to help you plan the next month’s budget.

Healthy Weight @ UNI - Weight loss support for a healthier you

My Well-being: Healthy Weight 2019 Expanding

In 2018, Employee Well-being piloted the Healthy Weight program to assist employees with weight loss and weight maintenance. Due to the high level of success, we are looking for 50 new members to participate in the WW (previously Weight Watchers) at Work program.

My Well-being: Practice Good Health Habits to Stay Healthy

With the return from winter break, it is inevitable that new viruses will start being spread among the UNI community. It is important to stay vigilant to try to ward off getting ill or passing nasty bugs to others. Wash your hands frequently. When hand washing is not possible, use an hand sanitizer that is at least 70% alcohol based. Cover your cough and stay home when you are contagious. Leave of Absence: What's FMLA got to do with it?

Do you plan to take a medical leave to address your own serious health condition or care for a family member with a serious health condition? Do you have a chronic illness that causes you to miss work regularly? Are you expecting a child or adopting? All of these situations may be qualifying reasons under the Family & Medical Leave Act (FMLA). The FMLA provides eligible employees with leave entitlement, job protection, and benefit protection. Whenever you miss time at work due to hospitalization, illness for three or more consecutive days, chronic conditions, or pregnancy, you should contact our HRS Leaves Coordinator. Wheaton Franciscan Healthcare Birth Control Services

Effective March 2019, birth control services within the Wheaton Franciscan Healthcare (Covenant) Network will be changing. The Courier article published on December 16, 2018 references vasectomies and tubal ligations; however, the changes in services may include other forms of birth control.

Taking Ownership: Coming Soon, New Wellmark ID Cards

You will soon receive a new Wellmark ID card in the mail. Your new ID card includes a new Wellmark ID number, so it’s important to put it in your wallet and destroy any old ID cards with an effective date before January 1, 2019. If you use an old card, your benefits may not apply correctly and the payment of your claims could be delayed or possibly denied. Always show your doctor’s office or pharmacy the most up-to-date card. To ensure you are using the most recent card, look for the print date shown in the lower left corner on the front of your card. For family plans, those on the UNI PPO will receive two cards. For families on the Blue Advantage, each person who is covered on the plan will have a card in their name. You may log into your MyWellmark account to request additional cards if needed.

Are You Saving Money on Your Prescriptions?

When a doctor writes you a prescription do you know what it’s going to cost prior to arriving at the pharmacy? Is the cost less at another pharmacy and/or less than your co-pay? Did you ask if the medication can be written as a 90-day prescription? Is there a generic available? Do you know if it is covered under your health plan? The UNI Human Resource Services Benefits Team has developed a step-by-step guide for you to follow before you have your prescription filled or re-filled. This guide can be used now with your current prescriptions or the next time you are at the doctor's office. It is simple to follow and smartphone friendly. Your health is important! Know your options and the costs.
