Holiday Shopping Tips to Avoid Breaking the Bank
This time of year American’s spend more during the holiday season, and gift giving is one big reason why. Sure, it can be a great time to get great deals (e.g. black Friday/Cyber Monday) but are those deals worth it if it costs you credit card debt at 18% APR?
First, set a spending budget and communicate it to your spouse or significant other, to make sure you’re both on the same page on the budget. Discuss with family/friends ahead of time and consider creating a gift spending limit and/or draw names to limit the number of gifts. They likely will appreciate this too!
Second, make a list and all the Santa’s out there be sure to check it twice. All kidding aside, a list will help you adhere to the gifts you are planning on buying and avoid overspending when shopping.
Third, consider homemade gifts. Sometimes these are the most special and appreciated. Even if you aren’t handy or crafty, there are still lots of ways you can DIY. You don’t even have to be creative. The internet has tons of ideas for all skill levels.
Lastly, follow the ‘less is more’ principal and focus on the joy in giving. Gift giving isn’t supposed to add stress. By keeping things simple and focusing on the joy in giving we can keep the holiday spirit alive. Happy shopping!

Staying Connected Over the Holidays While Staying Socially Distant
This time of year is usually filled with bright lights, traditions, and plans for gatherings. This year may look different for many of us. Public Health Officials are advising it is safest not to gather or to limit gatherings in person to help slow the spread of this winter COVID-19 surge. Yet it is still important to connect with friends, family, and stay community minded.
Second, there are ways to continue some traditions virtually with a little advanced preparation. Technologies, such as Zoom, provide us ways to connect with family and friends while distant. Ideas include: virtual cooking your favorite seasonal recipes, virtual black friday shopping party, playing games, hosting watch parties over Netflix or Sling, social hour with prearranged tastings (e.g. charcuterie board), attending virtual events and classes, etc.
Third, try to stay community minded as it helps us remember what all this distancing is for! Opportunities through the Cedar Valley Volunteer Center are one great way to do that.
However you decide to celebrate the holiday season, be sure to seek out ways to find joy, stay safe, and stay well.

Where Should You Go to the Doctor?
Urgent Care, doctor’s offices, virtual doctors, and the ER, so many choices for care! Do you often wonder what the differences are among the options and where you should go? Historically members covered on our health plans significantly over utilize the emergency room for non-emergency situations compared to the Wellmark Book of Business. By using each facility correctly you can save yourself, and the self-insured health plan, money. Learn more about your health care options on the Health Care Choices For Services webpage.
